Outdoor Festivals are THE BEST!

Hi fantastic fan!

As the summer says goodbye, The Cool Ones and I were honoured to play a bunch of outdoor festivals this past August!

Taste of the Danforth
We got to play this amazing festival!  Thank you to Lori for adding us onto the Celebrity Stage line up on their last day!  I will be back in the area for their March of the Santas in December – I’ve been playing there for the past three years, so it was nice to play during the summer at the Alexander the Great Parkette!

Mabuhay Philippines Festival @ Nathan Phillips Square
The Cool Ones and I took the stage at around 1pm to share original and some fun covers.  What I really enjoy about performing at this event is, one of the main organizers, Karen, really loves to promote original music within the Filipino Community!  Thank you Karen for your amazing support!

The Cool Ones: Alan Madhaven (drums) & Doug Norman (bass)

Pedestrian Sundays @ Kensington Market, Toronto
We made our way through the crowds to get to our designated area for Pedestrian Sunday.  First of all, the owner of the store we played in front of was no where to be found, and we needed to get power from them – so I panicked a bit.  Well, maybe a lot.  Luckily the head organizer of the event, Patrick, came to the rescue and found us an outlet and we set up to rock out on Baldwin Street.  Thank you Patrick for your support and to all that stopped by to listen to us play!  Check us out with our guest, May on saxophone!

The Cool Ones: Alan Madhaven (drums), Doug Norman (bass), May Akanuma (saxophone)

Stay tuned for more festivals coming throughout the rest of the year! Things to look out for: indie week, International Pop Overthrow and more! You can keep a look out here on my TOUR page or subscribe to my newsletter HERE.  🙂

From Far & Wide: We Are the North

Hi wonderful fan!

I’m so sorry I haven’t been here in a while.  So many amazing things have been taking up my time and I’m about put it in a nutshell for you!

I recently formed a collective with some incredible artists from Mississauga and we call ourselves, From Far & Wide.  Award-winning performer/arts specialist Heather Christine, singer/songwriter Matt Zaddy, Hip Hop artist/producer THE iDENTiTY CRiSiS, and myself make up the band.  We wrote a song to express how much we love Canada titled We Are the North and it has been getting so much attention and support!  It was recently named the Official Summer song/Canada 150 song for Mississauga! Thank you Mayor Crombie, Jim Tovey, and fellow councilors!

Take a listen to our song:

Watch the video by clicking on the photo!

Our song was shared with a talented group of kids who run the Glimpse Channel, spearheaded by Rob Aguiar. They love our song!  We visited them at their school to perform.  Click on the photo below to see a really cool segment about us and our song:

Figure Skating & Music = my two loves

Hi wonderful fan!

I was fortunate to be part of North Toronto Skating Club’s 50th Anniversary Ice Showcase.

Let me give you a bit of back story.
I started figure skating around the same time I started piano lessons.  I had dreams of going to the Olympics.  I lived at the arena and skating was a huge part of my life growing up.  I was also a competitive single skater and synchro skater and competed nationally.

Now fast forward to a few weeks ago.  I was honoured to be asked to sing two of my original songs while skaters would do a routine to my music.  And on top of that, I got to sing while that magic was happening on the ice!  I used to coach at North Toronto and they knew how passionate I am about my music, so they invited me to perform!

This performance has been the most favourite and treasured moment in my career so far.  Please enjoy a video of it below. Huge thank you to Thalia of Rinascimento Promenade for my wardrobe! I will have a better version of this performance in a month or so because it was filmed by some professionals.  For now, enjoy what my family caught off their phone!

Have a wonderful day and see you soon! Check out when I’m performing next under my TOUR page 😀

Guinness World Record Attempt -16 day long concert!

Have you ever taken part of a Guinness World Record Attempt?  Years ago there was a TV host trying to host the longest TV Show and I was a guest.  So I was kind of involved once before.

Well, just there is new record attempt that has been set out just in time for Canada’s 150th Birthday.  Epidemic Music Group has decided to round up volunteers of all sorts to create a 16 DAY long concert.  That’s 24 hours x 16 DAYS! What is even cooler is that they are raising funds for 16 different charities, one each day!

I was fortunate to perform and take part to help EMG obtain the record.  My time slot was around the middle mark on March 24th at 10am – and yes there were people there to be part of the audience and the buzz!

Thanks to Carlos Fernandez who did my sound at the event (and who sometimes does my sound at the Mississauga Celebration Square!), he took a clip of my Radiohead cover, Creep.

The event ends April 2nd and our fingers are crossed that the new record took place in Stouffville ON, Canada!

Stay tuned!

Long and McQuade gave me a shout out for International Women’s Day!

Thank you to Jordi Small and Long & McQuade for nominating me for their International Women’s Day campaign to celebrate Toronto Women in Music.  As you know, I’m a Mississauga Native, however I do perform in Toronto quite often, probably the most out of all the cities I’ve played in.
Here’s a preview of the cool interview on Facebook!

And here is the full interview:

*In celebration of International Women’s Day March 8 2017, we are running a month-long series featuring women from Toronto’s music community. *

Toronto Women in Music: Arlene Paculan

Arlene Paculan is a multi-instrumentalist and singer who plays Piano, Guitar, Ukulele, Harmonica, Glockenspiel, Percussion, and has just started taking on the Violin! Arlene plays in a number of different bands including Arlene Paculan & The Cool Ones, bronzecat, and Simple Cell. She describes her sound as “Soulful Pop.”

First memory of getting started in music:
“As a kid I remember singing something that I made up for my Mom with one of those plastic toy guitars. In terms of lessons, I remember starting out in a group piano class.”

Biggest musical influence:
“Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace and Alanis Morrisette are among the many Canadian artists I continue to look up to and who inspired me to create music.”

Favourite instrument or piece of gear:
“The piano – new and hardly used to old and worn out – the sound of an acoustic piano is heavenly to me.”

Most memorable gig:
“There are so many! I was fortunate to perform at the 2015 Paisley National Arts Festival in Scotland. I remember arriving at this gorgeous venue filled with beautifully decorated walls and mirrors which was known as a Speigeltent. The event took place on a Monday at 5pm and I looked around the empty venue during soundcheck thinking, ‘Wow I wonder if anyone is going to come to this event’. I didn’t have a following in Scotland yet, however I had a feeling the other artists performing that night had a big following after hearing their amazing soundcheck. As soon as the doors opened to the public, the venue filled up quickly. There must have been over 100 people in attendance. On top of the excitement of performing in front of new fans in a another country, it was also Thanksgiving in Canada that same day and my family back home was able to stream the concert and listen to it live. It was as if they were there with me!”

Best concert attended in recent years:
“Ménage at Cherry Colas: Out of the band, it was the main players, Bella and Fernando performing that night. They were absolutely stellar. The duo blew me away with their clever and intricate melodies and instrumentation along with their gorgeous vocals. They brought out so much energy to the stage that it was incredibly engaging and I was hooked. Their energy could probably fill up a big arena and when they get there, I bet you’d still feel connected with them.”

Currently on the playlist:
“The Beatles, No Doubt, Ariana Grande, Fiona Apple, Chantal Kreviazuk.”

Next gigs/concerts in Toronto:

March 24 – Earl of Whitchurch, Stouffville as part of the Guinness Record Attempt

April 6 – 120 Diner 9pm

April 11 – Celebration Square Mississauga at 12:45pm

Thank you again Long & McQuade and Jordi Small! Thank you to my loving fans for your incredible support!
